During the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed I have filmed the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 NASCAR. After making a splash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this year, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 NASCAR descended upon the Goodwood Festival of Speed in a flurry of V8 noise, power, and plenty of tire smoke. Piloted by F1 world champion Jenson Button, the Camaro race car pulled off one of the most spectacular burnouts Goodwood has ever seen. With no desire to break any hillclimb records or impress the crowd with outright speed, Button launches off the line in a plume of smoke, keeping the rear wheels spinning ferociously as the V8 motor roars away. With the start line shrouded by burnt rubber, Button then proceeds to rev the angry-sounding engine, much to the delight of the crowds. A quick donut keeps the gearheads entertained, but the driver is determined to destroy these tires. The 2009 F1 champion, clearly enjoying his time behind the wheel, sticks his hand out the window to greet the scores of fans at Goodwood. Not even the sound of a NASCAR V8 can drown out the adorations from the sidelines, with many responding by whistling, cheering, clapping, and shouting Jenson's name. Interestingly, the vehicle seen here technically isn't the exact vehicle that competed at Le Mans. Instead, Button piloted the Garage 56 backup vehicle that Hendrick Motorsports also developed. "Taking the Garage 56 Car to the Goodwood Festival of Speed gives us another chance to bring the world of stock racing to fans of a wide variety of motorsports," said John Doonan, IMSA President, and Garage 56 Program Manager, in the run-up to the event. To celebrate this unlikely Le Mans hero, Chevrolet recently introduced a Garage 56 special edition to commemorate the race car. Based on the ZL1, this unique iteration will receive Riptide Blue paintwork and an assortment of special touches. Just 56 examples will be offered to American customers, with all models powered by the familiar 650-horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8 motor. "The Garage 56 Edition captures the feeling of the race car while allowing the car's athletic lines to be in the forefront," said Marc Mainville, senior manager at GM's Motorsport Design Studio. It's one of several special edition Camaros that have been announced this year, and we expect a few more to debut before Chevy's muscle car is discontinued for the foreseeable future. Jenson Button's smoky exploits were arguably one of the highlights of an action-packed weekend, including several crashes and the reveal of a certain electric performance car from South Korea.
