2024 PORSCHE 992.2 TURBO S COUPE CONVERTIBLE SPIED TESTING AT THE NÜRBURGRING
22 Agosto, 2023
During the Industry Pool at the N?rburgring I have filmed the 2024 Porsche 992.2 Turbo S (facelift) testing on track.
The Porsche 911 Turbo has followed a familiar recipe for some time: twin-turbocharged flat six, four driven wheels and bulging bodywork that barely contains the muscle beneath. However, for the forthcoming 992 Gen 2, the Turbo?s character could evolve significantly.
The 992 was designed from the outset to accommodate hybrid power, and Porsche is likely to play this card with the 992.2 facelift ? in short, we could be looking at the first electrified 911 Turbo, and the most powerful of all.
This prototype was testing ahead of a projected release in 2024, and it?ll receive a light makeover as evidenced by its camouflaged bodywork. Porsche doesn?t appear to have made any changes at the front beyond new headlights, but there?s a new set of exhaust tips at the rear which will sit within a reprofiled bumper.
The mild design tweaks hint that Porsche is investing in mechanical changes with the 992.2, as has traditionally been the case with the 911?s mid-life updates. As such, the Turbo could adopt the mild-hybrid system that?s already been touted for use in the standard Carrera, which integrates with the current flat-six engine.
With the current eight-speed PDK gearbox using a 100mm shorter gearset than the previous unit, there?s room for an electric motor in the 992?s tightly packaged rear end, which will be powered by a battery mounted ahead of the engine. The Turbo?s 3.8-litre flat-six already produces 572bhp - and a mighty 641bhp in S form - but these outputs should rise with the hybrid setup.
In fact, they?ll need to, given that the extra hardware could see the 992.2 tip the scales as the heaviest iteration yet (for reference, the current car weighs in at 1640kg). Still, the electrical system should fill any holes in the Turbo?s already brutal power delivery, and it could even provide fleeting moments of pure-electric running for the first time in a 911.
