During The ICE at St. Moritz, Switzerland I have filmed the 1955 Ferrari Mondial Series II. This chassis, 0424 MD is the seventh second series Mondial built. It was bodied by Scaglietti and was delivered to its first owner, Mr. Yves Dupont, in May 1955. The car was originally destined to be chassis number 0564 MD but is reported that Mr. Dupont wanted to avoid paying French new car import tax and so had it restamped while it was still at the Ferrari factory. The previous 0424 MD had been sold to French racing driver Mr. Francois Picard, but it was returned to the factory in 1955 and is believed to have been dismantled. Mr. Dupont purchased his Mondial with the intention of racing and entered the car into a handful of events in 1955. On the 28th and 29th May it took part in the 12 Hours of Hyeres wearing race number 8 but was forced to retire due to engine failure. The car was sent back to the factory where the engine was overhauled and tested again by Ferrari engineers. Following this work, 0424 MD was subsequently entered into the Caserta GP in Sicily where it finished 4th and also the 10 Hours Notturne di Messina where it placed 5th overall and 3rd in class. Its final race was the Rallye Lie'ge-Rome-Lie'ge in August 1955 wearing number 11 and it had fitted with a full windscreen and a second headrest for this event. In 1956, Dupont sent the car back to the Ferrari factory to be checked over and have some work carried out but he was never to recollect the car due to his failure to pay the invoice. The car consequently stayed with Ferrari and was painted red by them before being displayed at the Autodromo di Monza. Following 19 years with Ferrari, 0424 MD was sold in 1975. It remained with the same owner for 23 years and during this time was entered into a number of events such as Club Ferrari France meetings and it was also displayed at Retromobile in the February of 1995. From 1998 the car changed hands a couple more times and it was displayed at the world?s most prestigious concours event the Pebble Beach Concours D?Elegance in August 2001. The car took part in the ?Tutte le Ferrari a Mugello Shell Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge Finals, finishing 24th overall in 2003 and participated in the Mille Miglia four times. Years later a Padova based body shop was commissioned to remove the red layer of paint and reveal the striking blue. After the work was finished, the car participated in Mille Miglia in 2009 and 2011 and took the Unique Special Ones Concours d?Elegance in 2010 were it was celebrated for its originality.
