1925 Sunbeam V12 Tiger – 152.33mph World-Land Speed Record Car at FOS – 4-Litre Supercharged Engine

It was an absolute pleasure to have seen this splendid 1925 Sunbeam V12 "Tiger", also known as Ladybird, in action. We are at the 2023 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. It is a car specially built to break the land speed record but also had a second use in Grand Prix races. Designed by Louis Coatalen, a French engineer, it uses a V12 engine with a 75 bank angle obtained from the union of two 6-cylinder engines that equipped the Grand Prix Sunbeams of the time. The result is a 4.0-litre engine with the addition of two volumetric compressors to obtain a power of 306 HP at approximately 5700 rpm driven by a 4-speed gearbox. British driver Henry O'Neil "de Hane" Segrave set the land speed record in 1926 on the beach at Southport, England. Despite the failure of the supercharged at the end of the launch, Segrave still managed to reach the speed of 152.33 mph (245 km/h), beating Campbell's record by just 1.47 mph. The car was subsequently used in Europe in the Formula Libre championship races, which allowed single-seaters of various types and displacements to compete; there was, therefore, enormous freedom in the technical regulations. At the wheel, the driver, Henry Sagrave, was always involved in the 1927 Italian Grand Prix but had to withdraw due to mechanical problems. Ci troviamo all'edizione 2023 del Goodwood Festival of Speed in Inghilterra. Si tratta di una vettura appositamente costruita per battere il record di velocita' terrestre ma che ebbe anche un secondo utilizzo nelle gare di Grand Prix. Progettata e disegnata da Louis Coatalen, ingegnere Francese, utilizza un motore V12 con angolo tra le bancate di 75 ottenuto dall'unione di due 6 cilindri che equipaggiavano le Sunbeam da Grand Prix dell'epoca. Il risultato e' un propulsore da 4.0-Litri di cilindrata con l'aggiunta di due compressori volumetrici per ottenere una potenza di 306 CV a circa 5700 giri/min mosso da un cambio a 4 marce. Il record di velocita' su terra venne ottenuto dal pilota britannico Henry O'Neil "de Hane" Segrave nel 1926 sulla spiaggia di Southport, in Inghilterra. Nonostante la rottura dei compressori sul finale del lancio, Segrave riusc? comunque a raggiungere la velocita' di 152,33 mph (245 km/h) battendo il record di Campbell di sole 1,47 mph. La vettura successivamente venne impiegata in Europa nella gare del campionato Formula Libre che consentiva a monoposto di vario tipo e cilindrata di sfidarsi, vi era quindi enorme liberta' nei regolamenti tecnici. Al volante c'era sempre il pilota Henry Sagrave che prese parte anche al Gran Premio d'Italia del 1927 ma si dovette ritirare per inconvenienti meccanici.
